Positivity Project

This week students in all classes enjoyed learning about open mindedness. Next week, students will learn about identifying and appreciating the good in others. We look forward to recognizing our students who are identifying and appreciating the good in others.

Walk to School Day

On October 12 Powell students will be participating in the International Walk to School day. The focus of the day is to encourage our students to get out of the cars and onto the sidewalks not just for the event day, but also for the rest of the school year. This event encourages more physical activity, more family involvement, and a better, safer, cleaner environment for all of us. For those students who live too far away from the school to walk, Mrs. Owens will meet you at Capstone Park at 7:30 and you will walk to school from there. If you want to meet Mr. Kirbo at Cat’s Cradle and Research to walk to school at 7:30 you can do that also. So put October 12 on your calendars and we will see you on the path.

Nominations for Gifted & Talented Testing

Nominations are now open for Conroe Independent School District Gifted and Talented program. Although the testing will not take place until February, nominations are accepted at this time. Nominations can be made by the parents and/or teachers. It is recommended that parents of 2nd grade students wait until CogAT scores have arrived before nominating their child because CogAT scores are part of the GT assessment. If you are interested in nominating your child, you may want to discuss this with your childs teacher at conferences. Nominations will be accepted through December 18. You may request a nomination form from Erin Anderson at eanderson@conroeisd.net. You can also find the nomination form and other GT information on the CISD GT homepage.

Parent Workshop

Collin Kartchner is coming to Texas on October 24 at the Nancy Bock Center of Performing Arts Auditorium (at McCullough Jr High School), 3800 Panther Creek Drive at 7pm.

Founder of the nationwide movements #SavetheKids and #SavetheParents, Collin Kartchner is an internet crusader, youth advocate, and social activist spreading education and awareness nationwide on the negative effects of social media and screen addiction on our mental and emotional health. His ability to connect with young people as well as to their parents empowers us to rethink the way we use our phones, and how we connect to each other. He specifically focuses on how the correlation between teen social media and screen-time addiction relates to the epidemic spike in teen anxiety, depression, and suicide. Collin raised $100ks for Hurricane Harvey victims last year, and will be in the Houston area only two nights (Katy Oct 23 and The Woodlands Oct 24). This is a life-changing event not to be missed. Come early to get a seat.
