Our Storybook Parade is Friday, October 6. Children are encouraged to dress up as a favorite storybook character. Your child should bring the book that includes the character he/she is portraying. No ghosts, witches, or goblins please. Students will parade through the gym with their classes at 8:30 a.m. In an effort to keep children safe in our hallways and on our parade route, we ask that parents be seated in the gym by 8:25 a.m. For your convenience, please enter the building in the back through the gym doors. When the parade has ended, please exit the building through the back doors also. Parade guests will not be allowed in the hallways. If you need to come into the building after the parade, please enter through the front and follow the normal check in procedures. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you.
Walk to School Day
On October 12, Colin Powell Elementary will be participating in International Walk to School Day. The focus of the day is to encourage our students to get out of the car and onto the sidewalks. This is a great event to encourage physical activity, family involvement and a better cleaner environment for all of us. For those students who live too far to walk we will have two places where we will meet as a group and walk to school. Both groups will meet around 7:20 and leave to walk to school at 7:30. So put October 12 on your calendars and we will see you on the path.
Powell is fortunate enough to be hosting an awesome author visit this year. Author/illustrator David Biedrzycki will be visiting our school on Thursday, October 11. He has written and illustrated several wonderful picture books. Visit his website for more information
Thank you to all our 2017-18 book fair shoppers. Mr. Biedrzyckis visit will be paid for with proceeds from last years book fairs.
Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills children learn, it is the one you can influence the most. Reading is vital to every childs success, and raising kids as readers means getting involved while they are young. Now is the time. Since there will never be a substitute for a parents direct involvement in his/her childs education, please make plans to visit our Fall Book Fair. Hope to see you there!

Collin Kartchner is coming to Texas on October24 at the Nancy Bock Center of Performing Arts Auditorium (at McCullough Jr High School), 3800 Panther Creek Drive at 7pm.
Founder of the nationwide movements #SavetheKids and #SavetheParents, Collin Kartchner is an internet crusader, youth advocate, and social activist spreading education and awareness nationwide on the negative effects of social media and screen addiction on our mental and emotional health. His ability to connect with young people as well as to their parents empowers us to rethink the way we use our phones, and how we connect to each other. He specifically focuses on how the correlation between teen social media and screen-time addiction relates to the epidemic spike in teen anxiety, depression, and suicide. Collin raised $100ks for Hurricane Harvey victims last year, and will be in the Houston area only two nights (Katy Oct 23 and The Woodlands Oct 24). This is a life changing event not to be missed. Come early to get a seat.
